Anthelmintics
Parasites exist in animals whereby it poses a problem for livestock producers for many years. Parasites come in many different descriptions, anywhere from intestinal roundworms that live entirely in the intestinal tract to external parasites like some ticks that require several different hosts to complete their life cycle. One thing that they do have in common is that they all derive their nourishment from the host, which in this case happens to be the animals.
Anthelmintics are used as prophylactics and for the treatment of various parasites in animals.
The more common name is dewormer. Each of its drugs classes have different mechanisms of action but all effect only the parasite having minimal effect on the host. Although it sounds safe, proper usage has to be governed in order to prevent resistance. This issue is important when the weights of animals is unknown and an over dose may be given. As a whole, anthelmintics serve its purpose to protect the animals from parasites but control of usage is a must to ensure safety and efficacy are adhered to.
